Marigold
Skincare that says good morning
With its golden-orange splendor, the marigold is a well-known and beloved medicinal plant. The plant, also known as calendula, is especially recognized for its healing properties, which give the skin a boost of nourishment. The plant naturally has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Throughout history, marigold has also been used as a remedy for everything from acne and sunburn to wounds and rashes.
One of the secrets behind calendula is that the flower is so rich in plant-based antioxidants, including carotenoids and deeply effective flavonoids. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which limits the negative effect they can have on the skin. Antioxidants pair up with free radicals, neutralizing them before they can cause damage like premature aging in the form of increased fine lines and wrinkles, and age spots. In practice, this means that calendula helps protect the skin from stressors, also known as oxidative stress.

Marigold soothes irritated and sensitive skin
When the skin is out of balance, it often reacts with redness, dryness, and itching. In addition to having a calming effect on all skin types, calendula can be used to soothe various skin conditions that can develop into eczema. Calendula soothes both the visible symptoms and the discomfort associated with them. A skin symptom can also be a sign of mental imbalance because the skin is closely connected to the nervous system. Itching and redness are physical symptoms that can be interpreted as a cry from the body, trying to tell us that balance is out of sync.
Marigold is anti-inflammatory
Calendula has anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe redness and relieve skin discomfort. Inflammation can cause many frustrating skin problems like acne, rosacea, eczema, sensitivity, and collagen breakdown. All of these conditions can benefit from calendula's calming effects, partly thanks to calendula's high antioxidant content. The ability to help protect the skin from oxidative stress is precisely one of calendula's clear advantages.
Natural collagen production with calendula
Collagen is an important protein for the body. It is the main component of our connective tissues and is the most abundant protein in our body. In fact, it makes up approximately 1/3 of the body's total protein content. As we age, the body produces less collagen. Wrinkles, sagging skin with lost elasticity, and stiff joints are all signs of reduced collagen production. Marigold contains saponins, which stimulate the skin's production of collagen and contribute to even and elastic skin. When collagen levels are high, the skin is soft, smooth, and firm. Collagen helps skin cells renew and repair themselves and keep the skin fresh.

Marigold in your everyday life
- Make a calendula decoction The whole flower, leaves, and stem are boiled and strained to obtain a light brown liquid. This marigold essence is poured onto a clean cotton cloth and dabbed onto the delicate or damaged skin area. It is recommended to use fresh marigold, but the flower can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
- Suitable for children The wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties make calendula essence ideal for children. Use for red bottoms, diaper rash, dabbing wounds, heat rash, or insect bites. Calendula essence is also good for sunburns.
- Culinary ingredient: Marigolds can also be used in cooking as a substitute for the much more expensive saffron. The petals give food a delicate yellow-saffron color.
